A LITTLE KNOW-HOW GOES A LONG WAY

Your guide to convert video.

01

Convert Video to Any Common Format

Video compatibility involves both the container and the encoded streams inside it. MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, and AVI are not interchangeable simply because a filename can be renamed. Choose the output your destination supports, then inspect the actual converted file in the application or device where it will be played.

A video converter is useful when a destination accepts the content but rejects its current container or codec. Write down the format the receiving application expects before choosing an output. After conversion, test seeking as well as ordinary playback: jump into the middle and near the end, then listen for sound alignment. Keep the original until the receiving application has successfully opened the new file.

MP4 → MOV / WebM / AVI

Start with an MP4 and select the required destination container. Some changes can reuse compatible encoded media; others need a different video or audio codec. The exporter should produce a valid file of the selected type, with sound and timing intact. A renamed MP4 is not an AVI or WebM conversion.

MOV → MP4 (for Windows & Android)

A MOV recording may come from a phone, camera, or desktop application, each with different internal codecs and orientation metadata. Converting to MP4 can prepare a more convenient delivery copy. Check that the picture is upright, the colors look correct, and the sound plays on the target Windows or Android device.

WebM → MP4

WebM is common in browser recordings and web delivery, while another application may require MP4. Conversion needs to preserve the whole selected timeline and sound. Review the first and last moments and a section with speech after export; a correct extension alone does not prove that every stream survived intact.

How to Convert a Video Online (3 Steps)

Choose the source file, select the output format, and run the conversion. Keep the original until you have checked the new file where it will be used. If the browser cannot decode a particular stream, the editor should explain that limitation so you can choose a compatible source or conversion path.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a video online for free?

Select a local video, choose MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, or AVI in the output controls, and press Convert video. Conversion is included in the six successful daily tasks shared across the site. No account or watermark upgrade is required. A failed conversion does not use a successful task, and the original remains available.

Does converting lose quality?

It depends on whether the operation reuses encoded streams or creates new ones. Re-encoding can introduce changes even when the output resolution is the same. Avoid unnecessary repeated conversions, choose suitable quality settings, and keep the source. Compare small text, gradients, motion, and sound in a downloaded sample before accepting a long conversion.

Can I convert to GIF instead of a video?

Yes, but a GIF is a silent sequence of images rather than a normal video with an audio track. Use Video to GIF to choose a short range, frame rate, dimensions, and looping behavior. For a longer clip, a compact video can preserve more detail in a smaller file than an equivalent GIF.

Convert, Compress, Done

A compatible format still may exceed an upload-size limit. Once the file works in the destination player, use Compress to set a realistic byte-size target. Keep the required dimensions and duration in mind, and check the final actual size. Do not infer that conversion alone must make a video smaller.

05

Convert for a Specific Destination

Start from the application or device that needs the video. It may accept MP4 but reject the particular codec inside a camera’s original MOV. Choose the destination format, then make a short conversion containing representative motion, speech, and any orientation change. This gives you something concrete to test in the destination rather than relying on a list of extensions alone.

If the receiving application also requires a particular resolution or frame rate, set those deliberately instead of expecting a container change to infer them. Keep the original available until the real destination can open and use the output. A file that plays only in the editing preview has not yet demonstrated that compatibility. When several colleagues use different devices, choose the version that works across those actual devices and avoid unnecessary intermediate conversions that add time and may introduce another generation of encoding loss.

06

Review the Exported Result

Verify the real media type rather than inspecting only the filename. Open the result in the intended player, listen to its audio, and check portrait or landscape orientation. Compare duration and look at the beginning and end for missing or duplicated material. A scene containing speech helps reveal synchronization errors. If the source has important color or detail, inspect it after the conversion as well. When an unsupported codec causes a failure, keep that error distinct from success: an unchanged source with a new extension or a silent substitute is not a valid conversion.

07

Keep the Source and the Version You Need

A project record and a downloaded media file serve different purposes. The record keeps the chosen tool and editing settings so you can return to recent work. The media file is the actual result you can play or share. Browser storage can retain media when permission and available space allow it, but it is local to that browser and may be cleared. Keep the original source and download important versions instead of treating the recent-project list as a permanent archive.

If a saved record asks you to reselect the source, choose the matching original rather than an unrelated file with a similar name. Check the restored parameters against its duration and dimensions. When continuing in another tool, use the actual finished result if the next operation should build on the changes already made. Starting from the original again would discard those changes unless you deliberately apply them again.

08

Recover From an Interrupted Edit

If a task cannot finish, first read the specific message and preserve the source. An unsupported codec, invalid range, model-download failure, and insufficient working storage need different responses. Retry only after correcting the likely cause. For a large or unfamiliar recording, try a short representative section that includes the difficult motion or audio; this checks the real operation without requiring a complete long export.

A failed or cancelled process is not a successful result and should not consume the daily allowance. Keep any previous usable download while retrying. After changing the source or parameters, confirm that the preview identifies the current file and the next export uses the latest settings. An old result should never silently become the answer to a new request.
