A LITTLE KNOW-HOW GOES A LONG WAY

Your guide to crop video.

01

Crop and Cut Video to Any Aspect Ratio

Cropping changes the visible boundary of a shot. Choose the part worth keeping and remove the surrounding area without stretching what remains. The crop rectangle is a composition decision, so inspect the subject across the entire clip rather than setting the frame from one attractive still image.

9:16 for TikTok, Shorts and Reels

A 9:16 crop creates a vertical frame from a wider source. Position the subject where the action remains visible, including any hand movement or props that matter. Watch the beginning, middle, and end of the shot; a centered face at the start may move outside a narrow frame later.

1:1 for Feed Posts

A square crop works well when the subject needs balanced space on both sides. It can also simplify a busy composition by removing excess background. Check that important text, product packaging, or gestures remain within the selected square. Cropping discards the area outside the frame rather than squeezing it into view.

16:9 for YouTube

Use 16:9 for a widescreen composition when the source offers enough room. Moving from a taller shape to a wider one removes some top and bottom content. Place the rectangle to preserve the part that matters, then decide whether the finished dimensions are sufficient for the destination without excessive enlargement.

02

Remove Black Bars and Letterboxing

For footage with black bars already embedded in the picture, move a custom crop just inside those bars. Distinguish embedded bars from the empty area a player adds around the video: only the former are part of the source. Preview the selected image to avoid cropping useful content simply because the preview window has a different shape.

03

How to Crop a Video (3 Steps)

Select a local video, choose a ratio or custom region, and export the retained area. Drag the frame to reposition it and use the numeric controls for an exact adjustment. If the subject moves, play the entire selection before processing. The downloaded file is the final check that the chosen framing stayed consistent.

When you crop video online, set the shape before making fine position adjustments. Changing from a square to a vertical rectangle changes how much of the source fits, so an earlier placement may no longer keep the same objects visible. Check the final ratio with the subject near each edge of its movement.

The numeric crop controls describe a portion of the source image. Move the horizontal and vertical position to choose where the selection begins, then adjust its width and height. A smaller selection enlarges that area in the output view; it cannot recover detail that the original camera never recorded.

If two people stand far apart, a narrow crop may remove one of them. Choose a wider frame or use a padded canvas when keeping both speakers matters more than filling every pixel of a vertical screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I crop a video online for free?

Upload a local file, select the crop area, then choose Crop video. The operation is free within the shared daily allowance of six successful tasks per browser. No watermark is added. If the crop needs another step, carry the finished result to Resize or Compress rather than starting again with the uncropped original.

Will cropping distort my video?

Cropping does not distort the pixels that remain. It removes material outside the selected boundary. Stretching is a separate change in the relationship between width and height. If you need the whole picture inside another shape, use Resize with padding instead of forcing it into a crop that loses important content.

Can I crop and resize at the same time?

Yes. Crop selects the retained image, and output width and height set the final canvas. For example, a square selection can be exported at 1080 by 1080 pixels. Keep the source’s proportions within that square; increasing the output dimensions cannot recover detail that was absent from the cropped part of the original.

Cropped, Not Compressed

Cropping and compression solve different problems. A crop may remove visible area, but the resulting file size also depends on duration, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. If the finished video must fit an upload limit, inspect its actual size and use Compress with a realistic target instead of assuming a smaller frame always guarantees a smaller file.

06

Reframe a Landscape Clip for a Vertical Post

Start with a landscape recording of someone demonstrating a product. Select 9:16 and move the crop so the face, hands, and product share the new vertical frame. Scrub to the point where the hands move farthest from the body, not only the opening pose. If the whole action does not fit, consider a less narrow crop or a padded Resize layout. Preserving the useful action is more important than filling every pixel at any cost.

When a label sits near the edge, leave a little room around it rather than cutting precisely against the letters. For a square version, make a separate composition choice instead of assuming the vertical crop remains ideal. If both versions need captions, finalize their frame first, then place captions within each visible area. This keeps text from disappearing outside a crop that was changed after the captioning pass.

07

Review the Exported Result

Check the crop on scenes with clearly recognizable shapes, such as a circular object or a rectangular sign. Those should retain their proportions. Compare the selected region with the exported picture, especially when the preview monitor has empty space around the source. Review all camera movement for unintended edge cuts. Confirm the real output dimensions and orientation in the destination player. Listen to the full result: a crop is a picture change, so it should not unexpectedly shorten the audio or shift it relative to the action. Keep the wider source if you may need another composition later.

08

Keep the Source and the Version You Need

A project record and a downloaded media file serve different purposes. The record keeps the chosen tool and editing settings so you can return to recent work. The media file is the actual result you can play or share. Browser storage can retain media when permission and available space allow it, but it is local to that browser and may be cleared. Keep the original source and download important versions instead of treating the recent-project list as a permanent archive.

If a saved record asks you to reselect the source, choose the matching original rather than an unrelated file with a similar name. Check the restored parameters against its duration and dimensions. When continuing in another tool, use the actual finished result if the next operation should build on the changes already made. Starting from the original again would discard those changes unless you deliberately apply them again.
